Thomas Levis – Ironman Lawyer
My wife thinks I have a loose screw in my 58 year old noggin. So do some of my friends and law partners. You see, on May 7, 2011, after a year of training, I competed in the St. George, Utah Ironman triathlon. I swam 2.4 miles, rode my bike 112 miles and then ran a marathon.
Well, a screw loose I may have, but I am in the best shape of my life. I have an amazingly low heart rate, my blood pressure is perfect and I have no health complaints whatsoever. During the year of training, I became significantly smarter about healthy nutrition. It’s amazing how quickly you learn what an 8:00PM “Blizzard” will do to you the next morning during a 4:30AM long bike ride! I became a much more efficient lawyer. The hours spent training every day taught me a great deal about time management. I made lots of new friends at the gym and on the roads, including a few crazy old codgers just like me. I even got some business out of my daily exercise routine. I can’t say I enjoyed the last 6 miles of the marathon, but I am glad I trained and competed.
Will I do another Ironman? Sorry, I can’t tell you. My wife would kill me.

Rush Nigut Speaking at BIZ Raising Capital Seminar, March 29th
Rush Nigut will be one of the speakers at the annual Raising Capital Seminar sponsored by the BIZ on March 29, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The seminar is located at the Des Moines Partnership offices.
“Many entrepreneurs don’t have a good understanding of the types of capital that start-up businesses can or should raise,” says Mike Colwell, executive director of the Business Innovation Zone of Central Iowa, the seminar sponsor. “This event will be the place to learn about the legal requirements, investor expectations of them, the timeframes and the costs involved in raising capital.”
Leading business advisors will deliver presentations on business valuation, fundraising compliance and legal issues, using friends and family as capital sources, angel investor expectations, and how to use venture capital and private equity sources.
Rush will be speaking on corporation and LLC entity formation (it’s not the gut wrenching decision some seem to make it) plus partnership considerations (don’t do it). Hope to see you there!
